Who was Maureen Colquhoun? Maureen Colquhoun was the first openly lesbian and first openly LGBTQ+ MP. Sadly, Maureen passed away this month at the age of 92 (Feb 2021); here Sammy Sturgess pays tribute to her contribution to Parliament, women's and LGBT+ rights as part of the History of Parliament's LGBT+ History Month activities. Colquhoun represented the constituency of Northampton North from 1974-1979, and although her time in Parliament was short, it was far from uneventful. During those years she separated from her husband, was publicly outed in the Daily Mail, and de-selected (then reselected after appealing) as the Labour party candidate for the constituency in the 1979 general election. Simultaneously, Colquhoun campaigned for women's rights campaigning in and outside of Parliament and involved herself in a variety of other parliamentary business. The History of Parliament is a research project creating a comprehensive account of parliamentary politics in England, then Britain, from their origins in the thirteenth century.
