(12 Nov 1997) T/I: 11:07:16 Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammad Said al-Sahhaf threatened Wednesday (12/11) to shoot down US and other Allied warplanes enforcing "no-fly" zones in the north and south of the country. The no-fly zone "is a unilateral and illegal decision taken by the United States and Britain," he said. SHOWS: BAGHDAD, IRAQ 12/11 GVS presser; SOT Said al-Sahhaf (in English): "For the period between the 29th Oct. till 11th November the no. of violations are 984. In north of Iraq during this period, 169 violations. In south of Iraq 802 (violations). In addition to violations of warplanes, the americans are using a second spy plane type TR-1. This spy plane during this period has one flight a day, every day. It is a very dangerous indication that the americans are escalating and deliberately trying to push the region to course. All this to tell the world that they are against lifting sanctions against Iraq; cas; SOT continues: "Several members of the Secretary Council intensified contacts with Iraq during those few days and there has been constructive exchange of views. We listened to those friends, their view and explanations. It is an open secret to tell you some of them have informed us of the tremendous pressure, threats and even blackmail they have received from the government of the USA. We are witnessing the hysterical preparation to adopt a new sick (Security Council) resolution that is the product of the americans blackmailing the others, I think there will be some kind of temporary submission. SOT continues: (Asked if the American inspectors would be expelled even if sanctions were increased): "Definitely, yes;" cu reporter; end of presser; 3.54 Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
