I learned the version I do of this old gospel song from Jefferson Airplane, but in looking into it today I find that it has at least some of its roots in Sumner County, TN, where an ancestor of the version I know was said to be written in the late-18th or very early-19th century by “Wild Man of Goose Creek” John Adam Grenade. This hymn went through many iterations over the years and Black banjoist Jimmie Strothers recorded a version for Alan Lomax in 1936 while serving a sentence for murder in Virginia that is much more similar to the one Jorma Kaukonen brought to the Airplane and Hot Tuna in the 1960s. My late friend and bandmate, David C. Hagwood used to sing this in our band Exit 65 and it will always make me think of him. This take on the old song goes out to Shag and our friend Ryan who actually asked me if I would record another, more difficult, Hot Tuna song. I hope this one will at least kind of do, Ryan! Best wishes, Everyone! May you all stay out of the way of the gun shot devil! “Good Shepherd” by John Adam Grenade and others, performed by Chris Durman, 2/26/2023
