In the 1953 British expedition of the Himalayas, two of the nine climbers persisted through the relentless hard snow to the peak of Mount Everest: Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Before them, dozens of men attempted to climb to the highest point in the world. Some with supplemental oxygen and some without. Oxygen becomes a vital resource at high altitudes. Low oxygen affects critical thinking, posing a risk. These men were backed by their partner, mountaineer-physiologist Griffith Pugh. In WWII, he studied oxygen consumption at high altitudes, discovering oxygen could be used more efficiently. All similar human pioneering achievements could be attributed to the failed missions or the scientists, but the mentality is the most fundamental variable. As Sir Edmund Hillary stated, “It’s not the mountain we conquer but ourselves”. There are moments when mountaineers feel fear from potential events like an avalanche or fatal exhaustion but it is still up to them to keep pushing forward. Notably, Hillary was scared of the worst consequence—death. In his 2003 interview with Time, he attributed fear as a stimulant to get his mind to its capacity. Many sports get this adrenaline rush going. One sport where the rush is particularly addictive is climbing.
