3 Types of Competitive Advantage Competition Demystified

In the book Competition Demystified, Bruce Greenwald and Judd Kahn identify three types of competitive advantages: (1) supply, (2) demand, and (3) scale. A supply competitive advantage exists when your firm can produce products or deliver services more cheaply than competitors. This might be attributable to privileged access to inputs (e.g., oil deposits), proprietary technology (a patented manufacturing process), or difficult-to-acquire expertise. A demand competitive advantage exists when there is much higher demand for your company's products because your customers are captive in some way. Customers might be captive due to their habits (e.g., a habit of drinking Coca-Cola), high switching costs (e.g., having to retrain employees to use a new type of software), or (3) difficulty finding a substitute (e.g., finding a good doctor). An economies of scale competitive advantage exists when your company produces so many units that a competitor could not achieve the same cost per unit even if it possessed identical equipment and technology. Bruce Greenwald emphasizes that product differentiation is not a competitive advantage, as differentiating your product does not prevent competitors from also differentiating their products and taking your customers away.
