Born in Fiji and raised in Sydney, Daryl Perry Lo's journey as an artist has been anything but conventional. He spent much of his life solving problems creatively in the business world. Though he once attempted to study fine arts, the timing wasn’t right, and he found himself as a creative in an industrial world, while balancing time to paint with a career. Later in life, Daryl returned to studying fine art, this time with a focus on making art sustainable. During one of his assignments, he discovered the concept of art galleries and residencies and realized that it could be the key to pursuing art while leveraging his business skills. When he shared this vision with his teacher, she responded with, “Everyone says this.” But for Daryl, it sparked the creation of something truly unique. That’s how @130artstudios was born—a studio and residency for emerging artists in the Illawarra, a space Daryl wishes he had in his early 20s. The studio offers Daryl the freedom to create without the pressure to sell, allowing him to fully express his art. Today, his work has been exhibited worldwide in places like Miami, Venice, and Paris, with Spain set to be his next destination in 2025. His process is deeply influenced by experimentation, embracing the unexpected and viewing accidents and imperfections as opportunities for growth. His expressive works, filled with bold brushstrokes and dynamic compositions, explore figurative and abstract forms, inviting personal interpretation and connection.
