In addition to recall, your dog should know how to do an emergency stop. STOP / wait This command might be called “wait” or whatever you prefer, but basically your dog needs to be able to stop right where he is when you tell him to. To teach this, first start with your dog on a normal, short leash. Start walking, and then say the word “stop”, and you stop walking. As soon as your dog stops too, most likely from reaching the end of the leash and being forced to stop, mark the behavior with a clicker or marker word and reward with treats. Then, this is SUPER IMPORTANT, say a release word, our’s is “free”. This is super important because it teaches your dog he is not allowed to keep walking until you say the release word. So, they should learn that when you say “stop”, they have to freeze until you say the release. Do this multiple times, taking a few steps in between each stop. Once your dog seems to get the concept, switch to a long leash. This step is going to take the longest, probably over the course of a few days or weeks. You’re going to do the same thing as the first step, but this time give him a bit more slack with the leash and let them walk a few feet ahead, and as you get better, try to give them time to decide for themselves to stop instead of forcing it with the leash. As you can see here, when Mochi “stops”, I walk to him to give him the reward. I do not want him to come collect the reward because that would be breaking the freeze position before I can say the release word. Once I give him his reward and I do say my release word, he can keep walking. As you get better, give them more and more distance to walk ahead of you before you say “stop” and keep practicing every day! This can be taught in as quickly as a week or two for some dogs, but it could take longer so keep going! Finally, you can try it off leash given your dog also has the other skills necessary. Also, you can phase out treats because eventually, your dog will take the being able to keep walking with the release word as the reward, so you don’t need treats.
