I found this new trendy, essential, Belfast amenity, down Blackstaff Square in the 'Linen Quarter', ( Was linen ever produced here? ), behind the famous Crown Bar, off Great Victoria Street Belfast. For those who have never been to France and don't recognize it, well,.....This enclosed gravel court is for playing Petanque, or a French Boules. The aim of French boules, or pétanque, is to throw the heavy metal balls (boules) and position them as close to the small jack as you can. To play, a player must step onto the pitch and keep both feet on the ground when throwing their boule. Boules are thrown out of the back of your hand. Apparently this is now the new game on the block. Isn't it great that fans of this French sport can now partake of a leisurely game, in the middle of Belfast city centre. Be warned- Get there early on Sunday mornings. There's sure to be a queue! You gotta laugh! Hey I could even be persuaded to have a go at this myself. It's a bit of harmless social fun after all.
