Spirit Gun, fire! 🔫👻 For GBA Conquest #258, we’re diving into the spirit world with Yu Yu Hakusho Ghostfiles: Spirit Detective. Released during the height of the anime's popularity on Toonami, this GBA title attempts to condense the first major saga of Yoshihiro Togashi’s legendary series into a handheld action-adventure. But does it capture the heart of Yusuke Urameshi’s journey, or is it just another "anime jank" licensed game? In this video, we’re following Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei as they tackle the cases of the Spirit World. We’ll be reviewing the top-down action combat, the character-switching mechanics, and the various puzzles and mini-games (like that infamous burning house maze!) that fill out the experience. We’ll also discuss how the game handles the Spirit Detective and Genkai’s Tournament arcs, and whether the hitboxes and controls hold back what could have been a spectacular adaptation. The GBA Conquest is my ambitious, ongoing mission to play, review, and archive every single game ever released for the Game Boy Advance.
