Tibetan Buddhist scholars agree that Candrakirti provides the definitive account of Madhyamaka philosophy, but they disagree about what it is. Some argue that Candrakirti is a nihilist, while others hold that Candrakirti reconciles realism with the emptiness of all phenomena. Candrakirti can help Buddhists approach difficult concepts, such as conventional realty in the context of emptiness, and apply them in ways that lead to a constructive understanding of the Madhyamaka worldview. Professor Jay Garfield draws from his recent book, By the Light of the Moon: Candrakirti’s Prasangika Madhyamaka—returning to Shantideva Center having previously led a course on Yogācāra in 2024.
