Hoofstuk 42** is titled *"Exile to Christ."* It tells the history of the Jewish people during the long period between the end of the Old Testament and the birth of Jesus. *1. The Return from Exile* King Nebuchadnezzar had taken the people of Judah to Babylon as prisoners because they had been disobedient to God [1]. Later, *King Cyrus* (Kores) of Persia took over and gave the Jews permission to return to their own land [1]. They rebuilt the temple and the walls of Jerusalem [1]. A very important change happened during this time: from that point on, the Jews *never worshipped false idols again* [1]. *2. Jews Living in Other Lands* Even though they could go home, most Jews chose to stay in foreign countries [1]. They lived in many different cities and became known as the "Jews in the dispersion" [1]. They stayed faithful to God and gathered in *synagogues* every Sabbath to listen to the Law of Moses and the words of the prophets [1, 2]. *3. Malachi: The Last Prophet* *Malachi* was the last prophet of the Old Testament [2]. He preached while Ezra and Nehemiah were leading the people [2]. He warned the people about their sins, but he ended the Old Testament with a wonderful promise: that the *Messiah would come* [2]. *4. Alexander the Great and Cruel Kings* About 333 years before Christ was born, a famous leader named *Alexander the Great* conquered the Persians and began to rule over the land of the Jews [2]. After he died, his empire was split up [2]. Eventually, a king named *Antiochus IV* took control [2]. He was a very mean king who tried to destroy the Jewish religion [2]. He put idols in God’s temple and even *burned copies of the Bible* [2]. *5. The Brave Maccabees* The Jews decided they had to fight back [2]. A priest named Mattathias and his five sons led a revolt against the cruel king [2]. His son Judas was nicknamed *"Makkab"* (which means **"The Hammer"**) [2]. Because of their bravery, the Jews eventually won their freedom and were able to rule themselves again for a while [2]. *6. The Romans and King Herod* In 63 BC, the powerful *Roman army* marched into Jerusalem and took control [2]. Later, a man named *Herod* became king [3]. Herod was a very **cruel and jealous man**; he was so mean that he even had members of his own family killed [3]. However, he also wanted to be remembered for something great, so he rebuilt the temple [3]. He turned it into a magnificent building made of white marble and decorated with beautiful gold and silver [3].
