After many years of living as prisoners in Babylon, God made a way for the Israelites to finally go back home to Jerusalem. This chapter is all about rebuilding their city, their temple, and their relationship with God. *1. A Surprising Hero: King Cyrus* Long before it happened, the prophet Isaiah predicted that a king named Cyrus would set God's people free [1]. When Cyrus became the King of Persia and took over Babylon, he did exactly that [1]. He gave the Jews permission to return to Canaan to rebuild the Temple of the Lord, and he even gave back the holy temple treasures that had been stolen years before [1]. *2. Rebuilding the Temple with Zerubbabel* A large group of 42,000 Jews traveled back to Jerusalem led by a man named Zerubbabel and the high priest, Joshua [1]. By the second year, they laid the foundation for the new temple [1]. However, they soon ran into trouble. The Samaritans (people living nearby who mixed idol worship with the worship of God) offered to help, but the Jews said no [2]. This made the Samaritans angry, so they bribed officials to stop the building project, and the work was paused for years [2]. Later, God sent two prophets, **Haggai and Zechariah**, to encourage the people to start building again [2]. With God's help and permission from the new Persian King Darius, they finally finished the temple and celebrated the Passover [2]. *3. Ezra the Priest Fixes the People's Hearts* Years later, another group of Jews returned to Jerusalem, led by a priest named *Ezra* [2]. When Ezra arrived, he was heartbroken to discover that the Jews had started marrying women from heathen nations, which led them back into idol worship [2]. Ezra prayed and cried for the people's sins [2]. The people saw his sadness, repented of their sins, and made a promise to send their foreign, idol-worshipping wives away so they could be faithful to God again [2]. *4. Nehemiah and the Broken Walls* Back in Persia, a Jewish man named *Nehemiah* worked as a cupbearer for King Artaxerxes [3]. When Nehemiah heard that the walls of Jerusalem were still broken down and in ruins, he prayed and asked the king for help [3]. The king kindly made Nehemiah the governor of Judah and allowed him to go rebuild the city walls [3]. *5. Working with a Sword and a Trowel* Rebuilding the wall was very dangerous. Enemies like Sanballat and Tobiah tried to stop Nehemiah with sneaky plans and threats of a surprise attack [3]. Because of this, Nehemiah armed the workers—they had to build the wall with a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other [3]! Despite the danger, they finished the wall and held a joyful Feast of Tabernacles [3]. Later, Nehemiah had to return to Jerusalem again to fix more problems, like people doing business on the holy Sabbath day and marrying heathen women [4]. He corrected these mistakes to make sure the people stayed obedient to the Lord [4].
