This is the story of Moses' dying and Joshua becoming the new great leader. 1. Taking the Land East of the Jordan God led the people towards the special land He promised them. Moses led them to fight and defeat King Sihon of the Amorites and King Og of Bashan. This land, which was east of the Jordan River, was taken into possession by Israel. 2. The Story of Bileam A fearful king named Balak, who ruled Moab, was worried about Israel. He hired a prophet named Bileam to put a curse on the Israelites. Bileam wanted the big reward offered by Balak. God told Bileam not to go at first, but later allowed him, warning him to only say what God commanded. On the way, the Angel of the Lord stood in front of Bileam three times, but Bileam only saw the danger when his donkey stopped moving and spoke. Bileam then saw the Angel. Bileam could not curse the people. Instead, God made him speak blessings and even prophesy about the future coming of the Messiah (the Saviour). A sad ending to this part: Later, Bileam convinced the Midianites to trick the Israelites into worshipping idols. Because of this terrible sin, 24,000 Israelites died as punishment. 3. Moses Says Goodbye Moses was a great leader, and he was 120 years old. He was allowed to climb Mount Nebo to look at the beautiful promised land. However, because of a sin he committed, he could not cross the Jordan River with the people. Moses chose Joshua to be the next leader of the Israelites. Moses died on the mountain. 4. Entering the Land Joshua sent two spies to secretly check out the city of Jericho. They were hidden by a woman named Rahab. Because she helped them, she was later saved when the city was destroyed. Next, God helped the people cross the Jordan River. As the priests, who carried the special chest called the Ark of the Covenant, stepped into the water, the river stopped flowing. All the Israelites walked across on dry ground! They set up twelve stones as a reminder of this miracle. 5. The Walls of Jericho Fall Down The city of Jericho was the first challenge. God gave the Israelites a very strange command. For six days, they had to march around the city once a day. On the seventh day, they marched seven times. Then, the priests blew special horns (trumpets), the people shouted, and the big walls of Jericho immediately fell down! 6. Battles and Mistakes • Achan's Sin: After Jericho, the Israelites were defeated near the city of Ai. God explained that someone had done wrong by stealing forbidden silver, gold, and fine clothes from Jericho. This man, Achan, and his family were punished. • The Gibeonites: Some people called the Gibeonites tricked Joshua into promising them peace by pretending they travelled from a very far place. Joshua honoured the peace agreement he made. • The Sun Stands Still: When five enemy kings attacked the Gibeonites, Joshua helped them. God helped Joshua win the battle by sending large hailstones. To give Israel more time to fight, God even made the sun and moon stand still. • More Conquests: Joshua also led the people to victory in the north at the waters of Merom, defeating 31 kings in total. 7. Joshua's Last Words Joshua divided the conquered land among the Israelite tribes. Even though they had the land, they later turned away from God to worship idols. Before he died at 110 years old, Joshua gathered the people. He urged them to always serve the Lord faithfully. He said that they must choose whom they would serve, but declared, "But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord"
