*Hoofstuk 1: The Bible is the Word of God* This chapter explains the origin, necessity, clarity, and content of the Bible. *1. How the Bible Originated* The Bible contains things the Lord shared, including public history and salvation history. It records words that we would not know otherwise. The Bible is important because it guides us to the Lord. Paul states in 2 Timothy 3:16 that *"All Scripture is God-breathed"* ("hele Skrif is deur God ingegee"). Therefore, we believe that the Bible is the Word of God. *2. Why We Must Know the Bible* We must know the Bible because we cannot know the Lord unless we read about Him. If a person has never heard of someone, they cannot love them. The Lord gave us the Bible because He loves us. If we did not have the Bible, we would not know the Lord and would not know how to serve Him. Historically, people who did not know the Lord worshipped idols, thinking the sun and moon were gods. The Bible, however, teaches us that the Lord created the sun and moon; they are merely His handiwork and are not gods. Since the Lord created us, we must know and love Him. The Bible reveals who He is: our **Creator and Heavenly Father**. We need the Bible even more now that we are sinners and separated from the Father by sin; Jesus Christ is the only way back. The Bible teaches us how we must live obediently and serve the Lord. As Psalm 34:12 says: **"Come, children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord"**. *3. How We Know the Bible is the Word of God* We know that the Bible is the Word of God because the Bible says so itself. This truth is not only attested by the Bible but is also confirmed by the *Holy Spirit* in our hearts. We hear the voice of our Heavenly Father in the Bible. John 8:47 affirms: "He who is from God, listens to the words of God". *4. How the Lord Gave Us the Word* The Lord used His Word to be written down through holy people. As 2 Peter 1:21 states: **"For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit"**. The biblical writers sometimes wrote in their own manner, but the Holy Spirit guided them so that everything they wrote was the true Word of the Lord. *5. The Word of God Remains Forever* The prophet Isaiah states that while the grass and flower fade, *"the word of our God will stand forever"* (Isaiah 40:8). Although some people mock the Bible, believing that science and knowledge disprove it, millions of people still believe the Bible. The Word will remain until the Lord Jesus appears on the clouds and earthly days end. *6. The Bible is Clear* Some groups, such as the Roman Church, previously stated that the Bible was too difficult for common people to read and understand without priests. However, the Bible is clear enough that people can learn from it how to serve the Lord. Matthew 11:25 highlights that God hides truths from the wise and understanding and **reveals them to little children**. *7. What We Learn in the Bible* In the Bible, we learn several crucial things: We learn **who the Lord is**. We learn *where we originate* and that God created everything. We learn why **sin exists**: our first parents, Adam and Eve, disobeyed the Lord. We learn what the Lord has done and is still doing for us. The Old Testament promises a **Redeemer**. The New Testament shows us that this Redeemer has come; **He is Jesus Christ**. The Bible tells us about **future events**: when the Lord Jesus returns and all things will be judged. People who love and serve the Lord will go to Him and live forever, while those who do not love Him will live in eternal sorrow.
