This chapter covers some exciting and challenging moments as they journeyed away from Egypt toward the promised land. Chapter 18 is about the Wanderings in the Desert [ time, and the people quickly became impatient and started to think that Moses might never return. They begged Moses's brother, Aaron, to make them a god they could see. God, breaking the covenant (agreement) they had just made with Him. God told Moses what was happening and said He would destroy the people. Moses prayed and pleaded with God to them. Moses punished Aaron and ground the golden calf into a fine powder, mixing it with water for the Israelites to drink. The tribe of Levi stood by Moses. Lord punished the people further, but because Moses interceded and asked for forgiveness, the Lord spared them and allowed them to move toward Canaan. God then called Moses back up the mountain to write the Law on two new tablets. They celebrated the Passover festival again before starting their journey. The Lord guided them using the pillar of cloud that sat above the Tabernacle. When the cloud lifted and started to complain again. • Complaining about Food: They started wishing they had the good food (like cucumbers and melons) they ate in Egypt, saying they were tired of the man was named Kibrot-Hattaäwa. • Miriam and Aaron's Sin: Moses's sister, Miriam, and his brother, Aaron, criticised Moses because he married a Cushite, and she was later healed. 4. Spies and the Long Delay The Israelites eventually arrived at the southern border of Canaan, near Kadesh. God]. However, ten of the spies brought back a terrifying report, saying the people who lived there were huge, strong giants, and they felt like grasshoppers next to them. Only two spies, Joshua and Kaleb, brought and wanted to choose a new leader and go back to Egypt. God became very angry and threatened to destroy them. Moses pleaded for the people again. God forgave them but punished them for their lack of faith: He swore that every single person aged twenty and over who left Egypt would die in the desert. Only Joshua and Kaleb would be allowed to enter the new land. Because of this lack of faith, the Israelites had to wander in the desert for forty years. 5. More Trouble in the Desert • Rebellion: Later, three leaders—Korah, Dathan, and Abiram—along with 250 other important men, rebelled against Moses and Aaron's leadership. God showed that He had chosen Moses and Aaron: the earth opened up and swallowed Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and their families. The 250 rebellious men who were offering incense were burned by fire. God also caused a plague among the people, and many died, until Aaron prayed and stopped it. A staff representing Aaron's tribe (Levi) miraculously bloomed overnight, confirming God chose Aaron's family to be priests. • Moses's Sin: After 40 years, the people complained again because they had no water. God told Moses to speak to a rock to get water. Moses was tired of the people's disobedience, and instead of just speaking, he angrily hit the rock twice with his staff. Because Moses failed to honour God in front of the people, God decided that Moses would also not be allowed to enter the promised land. 6. The Bronze Serpent The Israelites grew impatient on their journey and spoke against God and Moses. They were tired of the desert food. Because of their sin, God sent poisonous snakes (copper snakes/serpents) among them, and many were bitten and died. The people confessed their sin, and Moses prayed for them. God told Moses to make a bronze serpent (copper snake) and put it on a high pole. If anyone who was bitten looked at the bronze serpent, they would be saved. This bronze serpent was a sign that pointed toward Jesus Christ on the cross. This period in the desert, as we see in Chapter 18, shows that following God is sometimes a test of patience, and even great leaders like Moses can make mistakes. God always expects His people to trust Him, even when the journey is long and hard!
