The lens having two spherical surfaces curved inwards is called a concave lens, it is thicker at the edges as compared to the middle. Concave lenses were discovered by Nicholas of Cusa back in 1451. Now let’s discuss the various terms related to the concave lens: Centre of curvature The concave lens has two spherical surfaces, the centers of these spheres are called the center of curvature of the lens. So the centers of spheres of which the two spherical surfaces of the lens are parts, are known as centers of curvature. Optical center The central point of a concave lens is called its optical center. It is usually denoted by the letter O. Radius of curvature The distance between the optical center and center of curvature is called the radius of curvature. Principal axis A straight line passing through the optical center and the two centers of curvature is called the principal axis. Focal point Several rays of light parallel to the principal axis are falling on the concave lens. These rays after refraction from the lens get diverged that is light rays move away from each other and diverging rays of light when produced backward; meet at some point on the principal axis. This point on the principal axis is called the focal point or principal focus of the lens. Or it's also sometimes just called the focus. The concave lens is also called a diverging lens because when parallel rays of light pass through the concave lens, the refracted rays diverge. In this animation, we have taught about the rules for learning the image formation in the case of a concave lens using a ray diagram. We have also taught about virtual and erect images. Concave lenses always give a virtual, erect, and diminished image. A diminished image means the image will be smaller than the size of the actual object and a virtual image means that the rays of light coming from the object will not meet at any point, but they will only appear to meet. The real image is always inverted that is an image formed is upside down of the object and the Virtual image is always upright. Real images can be projected on to a screen, but virtual images can never be projected on to a screen. Images formed in the plain mirror are always virtual that is image is formed in the virtual world and you can never touch that image and the images formed on the screen of cinema hall using the projector are real images.
