The vastness and completeness of a perfectly balanced universe cannot be captured in a painting, but I attempt to evoke the wonder we feel as we experience glimpses of it. The sun is frequently juxtaposed with the moon, light with darkness, sky with earth. This series, inspired equally by science and spirituality, conjures thoughts of epic myths and creation stories, intergalactic travel and the unknown mysteries of far-flung corners of our universe. As the series has evolved, several distinct themes have emerged. It began as an exploration of the threshold between today and tomorrow as the rising sun burns away the darkness of night. Early paintings in the series are characterized by the inclusion of both the sun and the moon, along with vast skies swirling with tendrils of color. As a natural evolution of the sun and moon theme, I began painting solar eclipses. That singular lucky moment of alignment is a visually striking illustration of the balance I continually strive to portray. Just as humanity's space explorations reach ever further with new technological advances, my paintings became increasingly astronomical in their themes. My star-scapes often have only the sliver of an unknown planetary body in the foreground to act as a grounding force. My perusal of Hubble Space Telescope photos were the jumping-off point for my creative process for some of these paintings as I invented new imaginary nebulae. These cosmic images are analogous to conditions of the human spirit. As we grasp an inkling of how infinitesimally small we are, at the same time we realize that we are a part of something unfathomably large. The idea of spiritual expansion goes alongside with the interconnectedness of all things. Finally, I began painting images of the solitary, majestic Tree of Life, which symbolically encompasses all living things and the cyclical nature of the universe. The Tree of Life is perfectly balanced, the roots residing under the earth while the branches reach into the heavens. Each of my Tree of Life images has a stellar backdrop including the moon. The roundness of the full moon is meant to symbolize the fullness of humanity's range of experience as we trek through life on Earth. There is a common link between all the complex themes in this series: gratitude to be part of something mind-bogglingly awesome. We feel so small and separate, yet the essence of the cosmos is within each of us.
