DMZ Art & Peace Platform 양혜규 비대칭 렌즈 위의 DMZ 철새 – 키욧 키욧 주형기舟形器 (흰배지빠귀) 2021, 동석, 3D 프린팅 된 레진, 161×70×150cm, 남북출입사무소 커미션, 작가제공 Haegue YANG Migratory DMZ Birds on Asymmetric Lens – Kyott Kyott Vessel (Pale Thrush) 2021, Soapstone, 3D printed resin, 161×70×150cm, Commissioned by the Inter-Korean Transit Office, Courtesy of the artist Commissioned by the Inter-Korean Transit Office, Migratory DMZ Birds on Asymmetric Lens – Kyott Kyott Vessel (Pale Thrush) by Haegue Yang was conceived for the 2021 DMZ Art & Peace Platform exhibition. On 27 April 2018, Yang followed the Inter-Korean Summit from Germany. For about thirty minutes, reporters strained to record a private conversation between the two nations’ leaders on a pedestrian bridge, but their audio devices only picked up the peaceful chirping of birds and the intermittent click of cameras. Yang was inspired by the birdsong punctuating the Summit’s silence and identified the species of the birds with the help of collective intelligence on the internet. This sculpture consists of a lens-shaped soapstone, the width of which seeming to vary depending on the viewer’s angle. The geographical coordinates of the sculpture within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) (37°54'00“N 126°41'12” E) are engraved on its surface, along with phrases such as “Here / There / Voiceless Wind / Condensation-Like / Encounter / Korean Peninsula / Dispersion / Dislocation / Displacement / Pale Thrush / Flourished / Devastated / Sacred / Geometry / Familiar / Unfamiliar.” A life-sized pale thrush, which has been 3D-scanned and printed with transparent biocompatible resin, sits peacefully on top of the pedestal. Although this bird appears whole when viewed from the front, its sculpted head and the negative form of its body appear disjointed from the side, recalling the division of Korea as a nation. In addition, the soapstone, which reveals the surface color, sheen, and pattern in a variety of ways when soaked in moisture, places particular emphasis on the environment. While Yang uses biocompatible materials like resin and soapstone to highlight their eco-friendly qualities, the artist also utilizes digital techniques ranging from 3D modeling to printing and robotic milling. Similar to the moment when the heightened political situation and the sound of chirping birds were layered over one another, the bifurcated, transparent pale thrush merges into one depending on the viewer’s point of view. The DMZ is a space where the extreme oppositions of the Cold War and national divisions converge with nature that has been controlled and exploited by humans. This work, in which eco-friendly materials and cutting-edge technology coexist, establishes a new ecology for the DMZ. This new work is related to the three-part installation Migratory DMZ Birds on Asymmetric Lens presented at the Clark Art Institute’s outdoor sculpture exhibition, Ground/Work, held in 2020. For the production of Kyott Kyott Vessel (Pale Thrush), the Clark has generously provided their resources and shared their experiences with the exhibition team. The three sculptures installed at the Clark – Tee-Cher Tee-Cher Vessel (Great Tit); Hou-Ke-Kyo Vessel (Japanese Bush Warbler); Duiitt Duiitt Vessel (Gray-Backed Thrush) – were also modeled after selected bird species native to the DMZ. At the time, the artist imagined a ‘heteromorphic migration’ scene where American birds living in the park would encounter the sculpted DMZ migratory birds. Installed at the demolished site of the Guard Post, Yang’s bird returns to its hometown to join those currently living in the DMZ, creating a narrative arc of an ‘isomorphic homecoming.’ Instead of the current ideologically oriented thinking surrounding the DMZ, nature (migratory birds and soapstone) and digital technology (biocompatible resin, 3D printing, and robotic sculpture) emerge as new subjects of consideration. In doing so, the DMZ – which has stood as a symbol of the human world’s ideological differences and divisions for over seventy years – is envisioned as an ideal site to realize a new form of biological relations that enable the human and non-human to coexist during the Anthropocene.
