Global Network Webinar: Redefining Data Storytelling with AI

During the first Global Network Webinar of 2025 on 21 January, Angelica Lo Duca from the Institute of Informatics and Telematics of the National Research Council of Italy presented on "Redefining Data Storytelling with AI". The event was attended by a record number of almost 250 statisticians and data experts from various UN entities, 29 different UN Resident Coordinator Offices, and National Statistical Offices. Angelica began by unpacking the fundamentals of data storytelling, emphasizing the importance of understanding the audience and tailoring the narrative accordingly. She highlighted the three main types of audiences: the general public, professionals, and executives, each with distinct goals and preferences. The speaker then delved into how artificial intelligence (AI) can revolutionize the data storytelling process. She discussed strategies to leverage AI in personalizing insights, adapting narratives to different contexts, and enhancing the overall storytelling impact. Angelica showcased practical examples of using AI tools like ChatGPT to generate context-specific content and propose next steps tailored to the audience. During the Q&A session, participants raised questions about alternative AI tools, the integration of AI with reporting and presentation tools, and the use of voice interfaces for data storytelling. Angelica and participants shared experiences and insights. Angelica also emphasized the importance of maintaining control over the AI-generated content and using AI as an augmented brain rather than a replacement. The Global Network of Data Officers and Statisticians aims to improve coordination and collaboration among peers and organizations, to connect existing but not necessarily well-connected networks and initiatives, and to provide and share information on capacity building efforts globally.
