When BEAM robotics came onto the scene in the 80s, the idea of emergent behaviour giving rise to intelligence was popularised. However, the idea started much earlier; the very first autonomous robots used some of the same principles as BEAM robots. In this video, I build a classic BEAM design and go over how it "thinks". It should be noted, technically, the proper term for BEAM systems is "neuron nets," not neural nets as used in modern AI. From what I have seen it does seem like both terms were used in BEAM literature so maybe its not that important.
