In this how to video I take an ordinary 4 in 1 screwdriver and put a hardwood handle on it. It turns it into something spectacular. Far more valuable that it was before. This is the process of turning that wood blank on a wood lathe. I hope that this gives you some ideas of things to do in your workshop or studio. When I started woodturning I needed some ideas for projects. This series is my attempt at showing you some different easy woodturning projects to spark your imagination! For the first part of this project we have to remove a little metal receiver from the handle of our donor screwdriver. I do this by dropping it into some boiling water for a few minutes. The plastic around it becomes soft and we can bend and cut it out more easily. Next i need a ferrule for the end of the handle so I cut a 3/4 inch copper pipe coupling in half to use as the ferrule. Now we can prep our piece of hardwood to go into a chuck by turning it round and cutting a tenon on the end that fits our chuck. Once mounted in the chuck we can drill our piece of spalted tamarind first for the receiver and then a smaller hole further down to allow room for the screwdriver shaft that fits inside the handle. After that we cut a tenon for the ferrule with a parting tool. The receiver and the ferrule are glued into the end with 5 minute epoxy. Let that sit for at least 20 minutes before you turn. Mount everything back on the lathe and then cut the shape of the handle you want! The beauty of woodturning is there are countless shapes and textures you can do the choice is yours. Next I reverse chuck the handle on the lathe and turn the waste wood off of the backside of the handle. Put on some finish and we are done. I am so happy about the way this one turned out!
