In this video tutorial I show you how to make different refrigerator magnets on a wood lathe. I make three different magnets and walk you through the process to hold them on the lathe, create a recess for the magnet, and then make some design choices so they all look a little different when done. First I select a piece of spalted maple and drill a recess for the magnet to fit into. Then I mount the maple to the wood lathe on a waste block using a pressure sensitive double sided tape. I turn and stabilize the wood with come CA glue because it is really punky and soft. The second magnet is done with walnut and mounted into a 4 jaw chuck. On this piece of wood I turn the recess for the magnet by hand and then shape the piece more like a cabinet knob or drawer pull. So that I can get to the end to finish it, I reverse it onto the same piece of wood and make what is referred to in woodturning as a jam chuck that uses a tight friction fit to hold it on the wood lathe. The third magnet is made from Osage Orange and it is mounted to the woodlathe with hot melt glue. It is turned and has a few accents added using a disc of African Blackwood, a burning wire, and a chatter tool. All of the magnets are then mounted into the wood using a five minute epoxy. This is a great project to experiment on and see what you think makes them look cool. Fridge magnets make awesome gifts for your friends and family.
