In this video tutorial I show you how I make some tea light candle holders on a wood lathe. I wanted to start a series on how to make some easy woodturning projects and give you an idea of a variety of wooden things you can make for projects or gifts. I start out with three blanks made from choice hardwoods, (box elder, hickory, and honey locust) and turn them into candlesticks for those inexpensive tea light candles. First I mark centers and mount the pieces on the lathe to rough them to a round cylinder and make a tenon on the end so they can be received into a chuck. With some calipers I determine the diameter of the hole I need to drill in the end to receive the candle. With them mounted in the chuck I face off the end with a spindle gouge and drill the hole for the candle. Then I can start working on the shape on the outside. I choose different shapes on the outside to give you some ideas to get the creative juices flowing for your own work of art. On the third wood blank I hollow the end by hand and leave the bark on for a live edge look. At last we turn everything around and put it on a Jam chuck to finish the bottoms and make them perfectly flat. I hope that this video inspires you to try some of these ideas in your own shop!
