I'm finally getting around to reviewing The Funk, a bottle pushed to the front of the queue since it recently came in as a close second in a sipping contest over on Arminder's channel ( • The Best Jamaican Rum to Sip On ) and since - now that Rum-Bar OP is gone - it's the only remaining unaged and uncolored molasses-based Worthy Park on US shelves. But it needs some sparring parters, so I'm returning to an old series: My Shopping Bag, wherein I review a whole bunch of bottles that have nothing in common beyond my having bought them. Today it's some rums, some brandies, and a stray mezcal: Drouet "Réserve de Jean" Cognac Grande Champagne (7-15 years old, 93% ugni blanc and 7% colombard; bottled circa 2022; 40% ABV), 85/100 Pierre Huet Hors d'Age 12 Year Old Calvados Pays d'Auge (lot no. 110822, bottled 2022; 40% ABV), 83+/100 Derrumbes Durango Mezcal Artesanal (distilled by Antonio Panuco, Nombre de Dios, Durango; wild-fermented agave durangensis/cenizo distilled in a Duranguense wood/copper still; lot 23, distilled 2/24, 7200 bottles; 45.1% ABV), 89/100 The Funk Unaged Heavy Pot Still Jamaican Rum (Worthy Park Distillery in St. Catherine Parish, bottled by Proof and Wood; pot-distilled molasses, bottled circa 2021; 50% ABV), 86/100 Papalin Réunion 10 Year Old Vatted Rum ("Réunion Island distillery," presumably Savanna; 10, 12, and 15 year old column-distilled molasses rum blended with 11 year old grand arôme rum, bottled 11/2023; 50% ABV), 90?/100 The Huet is a serviceable calva and has a few "interesting" notes but strikes me as mostly skippable. The Drouet, on the other hand, is a bit of a star: even at 40% it's got weight, power, and a lovely chocolatey-grapey nature, making it absolutely something you can consider grabbing for casuals. This but stronger, Drouet folks!! The Funk is the cheapest thing here by far and, as you'd expect from Worthy Park, it's very very good. Don't expect an ester bomb and it does have a rock candy and yams thing that reminds me more of Wray and Nephew (and New Yarmouth) than Rum-Bar, but its 86 is well deserved. Meanwhile the Durango is the best bottling I've ever had from Derrumbes, even beating that awesome Michoacán from last year ( • Double Derrumbes: Zacatecas Versus Mi... ). It's leafy and floral and a little cheesy yet somehow extremely desserty at the same time: imagine carrot green ice cream and you're getting there. And then the Papalin Réunion is the best thing here but also the most puzzling: essentially you're getting Savanna's Cuba-esque traditional column still stuff (go watch that review at • Rum Nation Savannas: "Réunion" Rhum T... ) spiked with a big dose of their crazy, strawberry bubblegum high ester stuff, and it's really really good but it's also a tough one to wrap your head around. Good value, don't go in expecting aged Lontan (go watch that review at the same place), do spend some time with it.
