How to Buy Good Spirits: Some Absolute Basics

I don't do a lot of videos for beginners in the spirits hobby, mostly because I assume that all y'all who've somehow found the channel are already maniacs. But there's less decent introductory content out there than you might think, so here's my attempt at guiding beginners into walking inside their local liquor store and coming out with something actually good and actually worth their money. Relink, steal and paraphrase, add your own ideas, etc., surely we can't do this any worse than some of the big whiskey channels... But before the liquor store trip, some prerequisites to work on beforehand or on the side. PRELIMINARY STEPS 1. Learn to smell 2. Get a decent glass 3. Learn to sip 4. Get some friends involved! HOW TO BUY GOOD SPIRITS 1. Be picky about ABV (alcohol by volume) 2. When in doubt, check the reviews and the online communities 3. Don't spend too much money (at first) - think $20-60 4. Consider the QPR (quality-price ratio) kings: unaged rum, American straight whiskey (and then there's baijiu and infusions like gin) 5. Categories to beware: tequila (and sometimes mezcal), big brand cognac, rum, finished spirits, grappa/pomace brandy, vodka 6. Try stuff first if possible (and try lots of things) 7.
