We all know that the evolution of solid-state electronics has resulted in stupendous improvements in the field of technology. These electronic components replaced all the bulky and heavy components into compact and efficient electronic systems. Ignition System is not an exception to this. In this video, we have explained an Electronic Ignition System used in automobiles, called the Capacitive Discharge Ignition(CDI) System. We have explained its construction, working, advantages and disadvantages of the CDI system. Capacitive Discharge Ignition System uses a capacitor which stores and discharges electric charges. Here, The high current produced due to the discharging of the capacitor is used to charge the coils for ignition. A CDI system consists of a Capacitor, Diode, Silicon Controlled Rectifier(SCR), Triggering unit, Excitation unit, Ignition coil and Spark plug. The induced excitation coil sends an electric current which is used for charging the capacitor. The diode prevents the capacitor from discharging as it can allow current to flow only in one direction. But, the SCR connected with the capacitor, makes it discharge when it gets triggered. The discharging capacitor charges the primary coil which in turn changes the magnetic field around it. This induces a very high voltage in the secondary coil which is used for producing the sparks. This system requires a very little time for charging the capacitor and there is a fast rise in the voltage. But, the duration of the spark is less and there is also a possibility of electromagnetic noise. About Skill-Lync Skill-Lync helps you learn industry-relevant skills that will accelerate your career.
