Today, we're diving back into the 1963 Mercury Monterey project. Nicole joins me as we tackle the essential step of applying a dry guide coat to the primer. This process is like "magic" for catching those hidden rock chips, pitting, and sanding marks that would otherwise scream at you once the final paint is on. We're starting with the hood, using 220 grit to knock down the high spots and reveal the lows. Since we’re aiming for a metallic flake finish, we’ll be stepping up through the grits to 600 for that perfectly smooth surface. It’s a messy job—it's like being a five-year-old playing with charcoal—but it's the only way to ensure the body lines are straight before we hit the booth later this month.
