"I've never had a sad time or a sad life. A lot of things happened, but I never felt that I had a sad life." For today's #FlashbackFriday oral history series today we travel back in time nearly 45 years to May 26, 1981, to watch Suzanne Sandbo interview Karin Freeburg about her life and memories. Karin was born in 1905, and though her parents had already immigrated once to the United States, she had to become a naturalized citizen because she was born in Sweden when her mother traveled back to live in the home country again for a time. They returned back to Lindsborg so early in her life, however, it's all she remembered. She particularly recalled Christmas traditions and beautiful snowfalls in the Lindsborg community. She said her father was a teacher and she had a strict upbringing - with curfews about an hour before anyone else her age. Her early education was all in Swedish at a "Model School" in 1910, and she started off only speaking Swedish at home as well. She then got a four-year degree from Bethany College in just three years and began her career as a music teacher at 19. Later, she got an elementary education degree and taught English in Lindsborg. After retirement, she turned her attention to "doing what she wanted" - travel, handcrafts, gardening and bridge. In the interview, they also talk over a couple of precious heirlooms - her mother's coin necklace and her grandmother's pocketwatch. This is just one part of an ambitious set of oral history recordings under the direction of Elston Flohr, who was a member of the association's Board of Directors and part of the faculty of the Department of English, Theater and Speech at Bethany College. Those interviews are part of the museum archive collection, and there are about 30 Beta and VHS cassette recordings in the series, plus audio cassette tapes. They were created out of a project by the Smoky Valley Historical Association - Kansas and are presented here with permission of the association. Digitization of these videos was made possible with a small Nutt grant from the McPherson County Community Foundation. #ToTheStarsKS #Lindsborg #lindsborgks #lbk #visitlindsborg #SmokyValley #KansasHistory #oralhistory #oralhistorymatters #oralhistoryproject #EducationHistory #teaching #teachinghistory
