Kristoffer Polaha makes his directorial debut with MIMICS, a film that knowingly toys with tone, expectation, and tradition. Set against the world of performance and aspiration, the story follows a struggling impressionist whose pursuit of recognition turns into something far more sinister than a simple bid for success. Opening exclusively in cinemas nationwide on 13 February 2026, the film positions itself at the crossroads of comedy, romance, and dread. MIMICS knows exactly the kind of film it’s rubbing up against. There’s a long history of stories about performers who lose control of the thing that’s meant to make them famous — ventriloquists, puppeteers, impressionists — and they’ve always sat in that curious space between the playful and the disturbing. In conversation with CinemaChords, Polaha and co-star Stephen Tobolowsky talk through the practical decisions behind that tonal balancing act — what could be played for humour, and what needed to stay grounded to keep the film from losing its edge. They also touch on the difficulty of working within a familiar subgenre without slipping into routine, framing MIMICS as a film interested in questions of control, authorship, and the less glamorous side of wanting to be famous — when the pursuit of attention starts to complicate who’s really in charge.
