In this illustrated lecture presented at the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society, geophysicist and author David K. Lynch explores California’s most famous fault system using photographs, detailed maps, and field observations drawn from years of hands-on research. Based on his book Field Guide to the San Andreas Fault, Lynch traces the fault from Cape Mendocino to the Mexican border, with particular emphasis on Southern California, explaining how the fault works, how it shapes the landscape, and how its surface features can be recognized in the field. Rather than focusing on disaster scenarios, this program emphasizes understanding the geology, landforms, and plate motion associated with the San Andreas Fault, including pressure ridges, sag ponds, offset streams, and fault gouge. The lecture is designed to make the fault visible and understandable to non-specialists, using real-world examples accessible from public roads and well-known locations. 00:00 Introduction at the Saugus Train Station and earthquake humor 02:08 What the San Andreas Fault is and why it is widely misunderstood 04:05 Local faults around Santa Clarita and distance to the San Andreas 06:12 Why David Lynch wrote A Field Guide to the San Andreas Fault 08:40 Where the San Andreas Fault begins and ends in California 11:05 Plate tectonics and how the Pacific Plate moves California 14:02 What a fault is: strike-slip motion explained 17:10 Fault bends, sag ponds, and pressure ridges 20:32 Desert Hot Springs and vegetation lines marking the fault 24:15 Blue Cut, Pelona Schist, and rocks that do not belong together 29:05 Driving the San Andreas Fault through Southern California 34:10 Carrizo Plain, the Dragon’s Back, and classic fault landforms 38:05 Understanding the fault by seeing it in the field This program was recorded April 3, 2010, at the Saugus Train Station/Santa Clarita History Center in William S.
