Impurities - An impurity in pharmaceuticals is defined as any component which is not necessary and can be harmful in the drug substance. In addition, for a drug product, any component that is not a formulation ingredient is considered an impurity. Impurity is an unwanted entity which can affect the safety, efficacy and purity of the drug substance. Types of Impurities - There are three types of impurities in pharmaceutical substances 1. Organic Impurities 2. Inorganic Impurities 3. Residual solvents Impurities are also classified according to their sources which are 1. impurities associated with APIs 2. impurities that are formed during formulation Sources of Impurities-: There are various sources from which the impurities appear in pharmaceutical substances such as 1. Raw materials 2. Intermediates 3. Reagents 4. Catalysts and Solvents 5. Reaction vessels 6. Improper storage 7. Cross contamination 8. Manufacturing errors 9. Packing errors 10. Microbial contamination 11. Chemical instability 12. Storage containers 13. Atmospheric contamination 14.
