In this winter adventure, I head out to Burgoyne Woods in St. Catharines, Ontario—a true hidden gem tucked into the Carolinian forests near the Niagara Escarpment. With Niagara experiencing a classic Canadian winter and above-normal snowfall, the backcountry ski conditions are surprisingly good for a city park. I ski a quiet sunset loop through naturally packed, unofficial backcountry trails with my dog Bear. Along the way, I share practical tips on backcountry cross-country skiing, including breaking trail, skiing at dusk, changing snow conditions, grip wax and temperature, and skiing with a dog. The route stays near the ridge, crosses the toboggan hill, and winds along the back of the park near the main railway line into Niagara and the U.S. I also run into a fellow skier working an inner loop, leading to some classic ski talk and shared winter stoke. Burgoyne Woods is a year-round park, but in winter it becomes a quiet space for those willing to explore beyond groomed trails. If you enjoy backcountry skiing, winter forests, and local outdoor adventures, this one’s for you.
