It is a pleasure to present this very rare footage of my late teacher, Abp. Zareh Aznaworean of Blessed Memory, singing the well-loved folksong “Whence comest thou, O Crane” («Կռունկ, ուստի՞ կու գաս» - celebrated in its transcription by archimandrite Komitas) in an informal setting, on 30 September 1995. More recently, it appears to have been recorded externally from the screen of a television. I am most grateful to Mrs Marlen Arslanian Evingulian for her kindness in sharing this precious video clip. Zareh Srpazan would always decline invitations to sing secular pieces, invariably replying “if you wish to hear me sing, please come to church!”, but on this occasion he seems to have made an exception. I believe in the circle at the dinner table I can discern Fr. Arshavir Kapoudjian , Abp. Varuzhan Boghos Herkelian, whilst Abp. Hovnan Derderian may be seen at the other corner. I thank Fr. Barouyr Shernezian and to Arshavir Kapoudjian for their help in identifying some members of the company assembled around the table. We think that the clip is likely to have been taken in Armenia, as there was a religious council held there at the time, attended by senior clergy from various parts of the world.
