Dr. Beatriz Luna presents Adolescent Decision Making and Legal Responsibility: The State of the Adolescent Brain at the Colloquium on Law, Neuroscience, and Criminal Justice on March 14 -- 15, 2013 in Palo Alto, California. Dr. Luna is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. The colloquium was sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Law and Neuroscience and co-sponsored by the Federal Judicial Center, Vanderbilt Law School, Stanford Center for Law and the Biosciences, and the Gruter Institute for Law and Behavioral Research. Description and Learning Objectives: This session provides an introduction to the adolescent brain, legal contexts in which adolescent brain science has been cited, and on-going debates about how the science of the adolescent brain should (or should not) affect culpability assessments and sentencing decisions. Specific learning objectives include: • Introduction to the neuroscience of the developing and adolescent brain, with a focus on legally relevant risk processing, emotional regulation, and decision making capacities.
