Obviously this is not the place to talk about the very interesting world of medieval clerics, if anyone is interested in the topic write to me and I will be happy to share my researches; by Goliard here we mean an English early music ensemble from the 70s about which, unfortunately, there is not much information. I became aware of the existence of this ensemble thanks to Professor Davide Daolmi's book: "Carmina Burana, a double revolution" which I highly recommend to anyone who speaks Italian. In the book I discovered that this ensemble was the first to import pieces from the Codex Buranus into Great Britain. My amazement was enormous when I realized that, in fact, not even the great David Munrow had ever dared to perform a piece from the famous manuscript. I immediately rushed to look for one of their LPs and here was "Fortune My Foe", released in 1978. The album is a compendium of a very classic repertoire of early music: but consider that in those years access to the sources was decidedly more difficult than today. Once we get used to the terrible English accent that welcomes us in their version of "A lentrade del tens clar", what we have is an amazing album full of folk influences and very successful and extremely enjoyable performances, but let's talk a little about the little that I managed to find out about the musical project "Goliard". The group was born in 1975 and was formed by Chris Brown and Andrew Geuter. For a few years they performed at Warwick Castle and did some concerts at the Chapter Arts Center in Cardiff. They also played for private parties and entertained people on nights out and famous people and some members of the aristocracy, including the actor Victor Spinetti and the then Duke of Wellington. Broadside Records released an album of theirs called "Fortune My Foe" and Warwick Castle sold EPs of their music. The main goal of Goliard's performances was to achieve as authentic a sound as possible, removing the instruments from the sacred atmosphere of the museum showcase to present their strange voices to the widest possible audience. Since they themselves started from scratch both in the field of music and in the construction of instruments, a great sympathy arose between Goliard and medieval music, since they follow exactly the same model traced by the wandering musicians of the 12th and 13th centuries who had to build their own instruments and develop their own playing styles. A final word must be said for their version of "In taberna quando sumus", an extremely famous song even for anyone who approaches the world of so-called "medieval music" in a superficial way, well what not many people know is that in reality the famous melody... it doesn't exist. Let me explain better: the melody with which the piece became famous was actually composed by maestro René Clemencic as there is no trace of music on the manuscript above the composition. Clemencic's version was very successful, becoming a standard and since 1974, the year of the first publication of the music of the Codex Buranus by the Clemencic Consort, many ensembles, even very respectable ones, have continued to perform the version composed by Clemencic believing it to be original. Goliard on the other hand, with their LP published in 1975, propose a different version based on other suggestions, for example I feel the composition Meie, din liechter schin Autor by the minnesanger Neidhart von Reuental, a stylistic choice that is evident both for the time and for the geographical area. In the end here is a gem of medieval music that could have fallen into oblivion. Enjoy it and, as usual: I wish you happy listening!
