Twentieth Century Nicoville brings you back to basics AMVs. We return to the realm of classical music with the music of Austrian composer, Johann Strauss II. Strauss, as his father, was famous for his marches, polkas, and what made him specifically world-famous, his waltzes. He composed several waltzes as like John Philip Sousa with marches, earned him the title of the Waltz King. Also like Sousa, he wrote several operettas, or light opera which compared to regular opera is more comedic and lighter in theme, think the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, but more Austrian. His most famous of the operettas he wrote is entitled, Die Fledermaus, often referred to as “The Bat” or “The Revenge of The Bat”. The operetta tells the story of Rosalinde, the wife of a man-about-the-town Gabriel von Eisenstein. He is supposedly sent to prison, but instead heads to a ball at the summer home of Prince Orlofsky, arranged by Dr. Falke, to get his revenge for one of his practical jokes, and uses Rosalinde to reveal Eisenstein’s infidelity. All with the hilarity, plot twists, and of couse, the champagne that follows. This AMV, like the Barber of Seville, doesn’t focus too much on the story, but the setting is backed up by the overture as heard in Tom and Jerry in The Hollywood Bowl, where Tom conducts an orchestra of cats and combined with Jerry, more hijinks ensue. The AMV is a loving tribute to the Waltzes and music of Strauss, and one of the greatest animated comedy duos of all time!
