In this episode, we dive deep into the mechanical artistry of the MEL (Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln) engine family—specifically the assembly of a 430 cubic inch V8. Ford MEL (Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln) series engines produced between 1958 and 1967 includes four main displacements: 383 cubic inch (6.3 L): Used exclusively in Mercury vehicles from 1958 to 1960, known as the Marauder. It had bore and stroke dimensions of 4.30 x 3.30 inches with horsepower ranging from 280 to 330 hp depending on the year and configuration. 410 cubic inch (6.7 L): Offered only in the 1958 Edsel Citation and Corsair models, rated at 345 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque, with a bore and stroke of 4.20 x 3.70 inches. 430 cubic inch (7.0 L): Used in various Lincoln, Mercury, and Continental models starting in 1959. It had a bore and stroke of 4.30 x 3.59 inches and power output ranging from 360 to 400 hp in different years and variants. 462 cubic inch (7.6 L): Introduced in 1966 as a replacement for the 430, exclusive to Lincoln Continentals until 1968. It had a bore and stroke of 4.38 x 3.83 inches with around 340 hp and up to 485 lb-ft of torque. All MEL engines shared common architecture such as a wedge-shaped combustion chamber created by the angled block deck and were produced in Lima, Ohio.
