WATCH THE FULL SERIES: • 2025 - Year One JOURNAL: December 3rd. Came home from Thanksgiving with the family to winter weather in full swing. This morning I’m planning out the remainder of the kitchen counter frame. December 6th. Rain has slowed things down these last few days, but I used the pause to dig through the 2x4s at Lowe’s and pull the best ones—straight, mostly quarter-sawn, and clean of blemishes. Today’s goal is to cut everything to size and plane the surfaces smooth. I saved the nicest boards for the seven-foot lengths that will form the back of the counter frame, then picked the most handsome pieces for the front uprights since they’ll be the ones you see. With everything rough-cut, I went to work with the hand plane. It’s such a satisfying tool, and it’ll warm you up faster than any heater. I ended up with a mountain of shavings and decided to make a small fire to round out the afternoon. Good to feel things moving forward again. December 11th. A cold day. Not brutally cold, but the wind cuts right through you. I’m anxious to get the shellac finished and finally assemble the counter frame. Gave myself an early Christmas gift too - a real bed! Looking forward to a good night’s sleep. December 12th. What a treat it was to sleep in a real bed. This place feels a little more like home every day. I’m still weighing my options for the countertop material, but it’s nice to have some temporary boards in place for now. I think I’ll take the morning slow, enjoy a cup of coffee, and finally pick up that old guitar again.
