WATCH THE FULL SERIES: • 2025 - Year One JOURNAL: October 30th. A Day Off. I’ve been sprinting to finish this conversion and get moved in before winter—and today, that goal is finally achieved. There’s still plenty left to do, but for now, I’m giving myself permission to enjoy the spoils of my labor. Fall is in full swing. The air’s cool, the leaves are piling up on the deck and in the gutters, and the shed feels more like home every day. Lately, I’ve been sketching ideas for the kitchen. Putting things on paper always helps me think more clearly about layout and flow. My setup right now is temporary, but it covers the essentials. I’ve brought over a few things from the truck camper—the mattress, sleeping bag, and chuckbox kitchen. The kitchen counter is an oak slab workbench resting on a pair of sawhorses. It’s crude, but it works. I’ve picked up a few other things to make this shed-living setup work too: a Compocloset Cuddy composting toilet (which, to my surprise, works beautifully), a mini fridge with a proper freezer—now full of venison my cousin’s husband gifted me—and an electric coil cooktop so I don’t have to worry about carbon monoxide indoors. For a sink, I’m making do with a bucket and my refurbished RinseKit. I paid $150 for it a few months back, and it’s more than earned its keep. Using the space in this temporary way has been a great learning experience. It’s helped me refine my kitchen design and think about how I actually move and live in the space. Still, I’ll admit—I’m looking forward to a real sink soon. Time to make some chili for dinner.
