Originally streamed Oct 16, 2023. The seventh proper annual "Horror Month." It's back to a variety of horror games from a variety of systems, including my first Dreamcast game onstream! Resident Evil is one of the ultimate classic horror games, survival or otherwise. Known as the original "survival horror," this specific game is the one that most lives up to that title, especially if you play as Chris. When playing as Chris, ammo is scarce enough that you really want to avoid combat whenever possible, and the mansion always feels dangerous. This game is still the most crystallized and pure version of that "survival horror" concept, and I wish more games would have followed suit. Resident Evil draws inspiration from Capcom's NES game Sweet Home for it's premise and setting, but it draws inspiration from Alone in the Dark for it's gameplay. Except, for how awkward and amateurish Alone in the Dark could be, Resident Evil feels super polished and looks fantastic. And that's true even today, this is still one of the most exciting horror games to play through, without a doubt. The graphical look, using a lot of pre-rendered backgrounds, is also what brought forth the idea of using many different camera angles, and that dynamic cinematic look still to this day puts this game far above most other horror games in terms of it's look. This game looks wonderful, it looks cinematic. The constant change of camera angles means that the game constantly feels visually interesting. And although there are rare times when this can be a gameplay detriment (people tend to heavily exaggerate this) generally this is not a problem if you play slowly and carefully, and listen to audio cues. Which of course adds a lot of suspense. This game also has a masterful soundtrack, incredibly memorable and cool, and perfect for setting the game's atmosphere. This is still by far the best soundtrack in the RE series, and compared to the later games with their bland generic music, it's not even close. The music in this game gives it so much more character than most other horror games could hope to have. Just a wonderful game that holds up extremely well. This is still one of the best horror games, period, and should be played by any fan of horror! The remake is good too, (unlike the other RE remakes) but it doesn't replace this game... this game must be played! If only more horror games could be this good!
