Vortex Lattice Ballet : Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensate A top-down look at a spinning Bose-Einstein condensate (an ultracold, superfluid “pancake” of atoms) forming a crystal of tiny whirlpools called quantized vortices. This is a physics visualization driven entirely by code (2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation), rendered in six acts. What it is: A superfluid can’t spin like a normal liquid. Instead, rotation appears as many tiny holes-each a vortex carrying one quantum of circulation. As we stir and tune the trap, those dots arrange into a hexagonal Abrikosov lattice, breathe, shear into streets, and finally merge into a giant vortex before we fade out. How it evolves Spin-up: we “stir” the cloud with a moving laser spot (the “spoon”), seeding the first vortices. Crystallize: more vortices enter and self-organize into a neat lattice. Breathe: the lattice gently inflates/deflates-Tkachenko modes. Vortex streets: controlled shear sends rows of vortices drifting like traffic lanes. Giant vortex: we raise a central plug, pooling circulation into a wide core. Dissolve: rotation is lowered and the pattern soft-lands. How it works (under the hood) Equation: 2D Gross–Pitaevskii dynamics (ℏ = m = 1), split-step with FFT. Forces: harmonic trap, rotating frame, optional spoon (stirrer) and center plug. Boundaries: soft absorber to prevent edge echoes. Visuals: glow = density, dots = detected vortex cores (yellow/blue for sign), faint hairlines = tracer trails following the local superfluid flow. What you’ll see (timecodes) 0:00 Act I — Spin-Up & First Vortex 1:00 Act II — Abrikosov Crystallization 1:45 Act III — Tkachenko Breathing 2:30 Act IV — Quantum Vortex Streets 3:15 Act V — Giant Vortex 4:15 Act VI — Dissolve 5:00 End Notes: This is a research/visualization piece—parameters are chosen for clarity and drama, not for a specific experiment. All footage is simulation-generated; no footage of real atoms here… yet. Questions welcome—drop them in the comments and we’ll do a follow-up breakdown.
