Hey guys! This is every level crossing on the Mernda Line. Located in Melbournes NNE, the Mernda Line features 14 level crossings as of 2023. Before 2019, the crossing had 19 level crossings. These extra 5 included one of Melbourne's biggest crossings, High St Reservoir, which was removed in December 2019, then followed by the 4 level crossings in Preston; Murray Rd, Cramer St, Bell St & Oakover Rd. The line also holds the newest section of metro electrification (as of dec 2023) being the extension from South Morang to Mernda which saw its first trains in August 2018. This extension added 3 new stations; Middle Gorge, Hawkstowe & Mernda. There are rail yards at both Epping & Mernda, both of which hold 8+ 6 car xtrapolis trains. My ratings of each crossing: Ramsden St, Clifton Hill. 9/10. A nice quiet crossing just south of Clifton Hill station. Sees both Mernda and Hurstbridge trains, so peakhour is busy for this crossing. The equipment here is getting close to one of Melbourne's oldest, featuring Barker Technics E-Bells, a mix of Incandescents & Westinghouse gate mechanisms. Charles St, Merri 7.5/10 Another nice and quiet crossing in a quiet residential street. I really like the double S bend in the road at this crossing, and the open greenery adds for a nice environment. Common equipment but I quite like it. Arthurton Rd, Northcote 7/10 While being 1 of 2 crossings in the area that missed being upgraded with new equipment, its not the most appealing crossing to me. While it retains its incandescents & westinghouse gate mechanisms, its a generic setup that you could find in other places. However, i guess the equipment featured here may not last too much longer across the metro network. The area is decent though. Beavers Rd, Croxton 8/10 This is certainly one of the quietest crossings on the line, being purely a residential street. The crossing was half upgraded with new equipment a few years ago, however the gated signals still have the older style LED's, contrast to the new style LED's on the gateless signals. The little park on the South East side of the crossing is a nice spot to sit. Woolton Ave, Thornbury 7/10 Generic new equipment setup, but still has older and faded signage. Bit more of a busy road than the previous but still not packed. East facing crossbuck on the gated signal has been missing for years now and shows no signs of being replaced. Very open area here. Normanby Ave, Thornbury 7/10 Another generic setup, the south facing gateless signal's distance from the road is probably the only mainly notable 'feature'. Cool spot for trackside shots, especially up the grade for northbound trains. As of filming the southern side GS bell had quite significant body damage, however didnt effect the operation of the bell. Hutton St, Thornbury 7.5/10 The 2nd of 2 crossings that survived upgrade, still featuring incandescents and WH gate mechanisms. Not super notable but not bad either. Regent St, Regent 8/10 While a quite common metro setup, i actually dont mind this spot. It might be the trees around? Im not actually quite sure. But its a decent crossing and its one of my more liked crossings on the line. Keon Parade, Keon Park 9.5/10 At the moment, definitely one of my top 3 favourite crossings on the line. Quad gate setup, (at the moment) 2 hinged gates - which are on brand new signals, the east side compared to the west side has completely different equipment, etc. Also to note; my Westinghouse Hybrid bell came from this crossing. Settlement Road, Thomastown 8/10 Another quite decent crossing on the line, Settlement Road still features a CRB Cantilever, and one of the bases from the original signal when it was a single track line. Heyington Ave, Thomastown 6.5/10 Both sides of the crossing are almost identical, one of the newer setups on the line, only dating back to Nov 2011 when the line between Keon Park & Epping was duplicated. Manns Crossing, Lalor 8/10 Despite being yet again a November 2011 setup, Manns Crossing is another one of my favourites on the line. Im not exactly sure why though, probably just how its between two roads and like the double lights n stuff... Paschke Cres, Lalor 7/10 Pretty much another setup like Heyington Ave, except with a different setup and a couple different light types. Nothing super notable other than the length across the crossing due to Lalor being an island platform. Childs Road, Epping 7/10 The crossing that USED to be good. Before duplication and another 2011 setup, this crossing had Westinghouse ped mechanisms, incandescents, and a westinghouse hybrid, PLUS, a Western Cullen Hayes Mechanical bell! Now though, super average. And thats all! There are talks of extending the line for the 4th time to Whittlesea (where it used to go to anyway, some remnants remain) however its not confirmed yet, and with LXRA being a thing, i doubt any more crossings will be added if the extension happens. I hope you enjoy! -Ethan
