(29 Apr 2000) Natural Sound XFA South Korean workers and students have clashed with police during a protest march in central Seoul. Workers are demanding a shorter working week and are opposed to the sale of firms to foreign investors. The clashes came at the end of a largely peaceful parade of 15 thousand unionised workers, celebrating the 110th anniversary of Labour Day - May 1st. Some 200 students rushed out of nowhere and attacked police with wooden clubs. Riot police - fully geared with shield, helmets and cudgels - immediately retaliated with force. A few students were injured and arrested. Enraged workers threw sidewalk blocks. The clashes lasted for about 30 minutes. Earlier in the day 15-thousand workers paraded 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) along busy streets, carrying hundreds of red, yellow and blue placards. SOUNDBITE: (Korean) " We have clearly shown our strength and demand in today's protest march. The May day protest is the start of our unceasing struggle towards a full - scare strike on May 30." SUPER CAPTION: Lee Soo-Ho, General Secretary of Korean Confederation of Trades Unions South Korean police authorities refused to disclose the exact number of injuries and arrests. No other clashes have been reported in 14 other cities which held the pre-May Day rally, the police said.
