(29 Apr 2000) Natural Sound XFA South Korean workers and students have clashed with police during a protest march in central Seoul. Workers are demanding a shorter working week and are opposed to the sale of firms to foreign investors. The clashes came at the end of a largely peaceful parade of 15 thousand unionised workers, celebrating the 110th anniversary of Labour Day - May 1st. Some 200 students rushed out of nowhere and attacked police with wooden clubs. Riot police - fully geared with shield, helmets and cudgels - immediately retaliated with force. A few students were injured and arrested. Enraged workers threw sidewalk blocks. The clashes lasted for about 30 minutes. Earlier in the day 15-thousand workers paraded 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) along busy streets, carrying hundreds of red, yellow and blue placards. SOUNDBITE: (Korean) " We have clearly shown our strength and demand in today's protest march. The May day protest is the start of our unceasing struggle towards a full - scare strike on May 30." No other clashes have been reported in 14 other cities which held the pre-May Day rally, the police said.
