During the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, the mosque has opened its doors not only to worshippers but also to guests from the wider city, inviting them to observe and share in the breaking of the fast. Just before 7 p.m., as the winter light fades, the prayer hall falls quiet. Men and women stand shoulder to shoulder beneath hanging lamps, waiting for the adhan, the call to prayer. In Islam, Muslims pray five times a day at prescribed times: Fajr before dawn, Dhuhr at midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib at sunset and Isha at night.
