Daan Botlek (Vlaardingen, 1977) makes drawings in which the human figure is central. Using sharp contours and bright colours, he creates humorous scenes in which the characters always correlate with the environment. The feeling for geometry and proportion in Botlek’s pictures imbues them with motion and gravity, teasing the viewer’s spatial perception. His drawings start on paper and are then transposed onto a location, applying them as monumental murals in empty buildings or outside spaces in cities, such as Rotterdam, Leipzig, and Mumbai. Especially for this exhibition, the artist has made a new spatial installation and a wall painting that tests scale and dimension. The installation suggests an infinite movement, like a Möbius strip, and plays with the volume of the space; stretching, as it were, beyond the walls of the exhibition space. Whereas Botlek often presents open structures in an outdoor context, this mural appears as if cast into a delineated and compact form. Instead of working with the givens of an exterior setting – irregularities in walls, the play of light, pipelines – he creates these conditions by devising rules that allow his imagery to take form.
