All songs composed by Mitchell/Dubois (except for track 3 by Mitchell). Kim Mitchell - guitar & lead vocals Mike Tilka - bass & vocals Jim Bruton - keyboards & vocals Paul Kersey - drums 1) Here Among the Cats (0:00) 2) Marmalade Mama (4:18) 3) Lily [cut] (8:06) 4) Overnight Sensation (13:09) This is an undated early recording of Max Webster as a bar band. It's almost certainly a late 1973 gig in Toronto, but it could be as late as February 1974 (Terry Watkinson joined the band that month). Only these four tracks survived on a reel-to-reel tape that was safely digitized in 2020. The longer arrangement of "Here Among the Cats" is interesting, with Bruton unleashing his inner Keith Emerson with a solo similar to the one in "Mass" off ELP's Tarkus album. I'd argue this is the definitive version of "Overnight Sensation" - it dwarfs the eventual studio version, with Mitchell leading the band through a riveting middle section. These tracks are a revelation of how good this band was even in the beginning. They are young and hungry, rock solid, taking no prisoners.
