Jean Henri Ravina - L'enfant perdu! (Poésie funèbre), Op. 70

In 1871, Ravina published his 'poésie funèbre' in memory of his son, who had died the year before. 'L'enfant perdu!' (The Dead Child) is in ternary form, with an introduction marked "lugubre". The tender melody of the A section is contrasted with the explosiveness of the B section, marked "sonore". When the A section returns, it's instead played dolcissimo, representing the child's ascension to heaven and Ravina's acceptance. The piece ends with another wave of despair, as the lugubre introduction concludes the piece, with the assistance of the dark, gloomy B-flat octave tremolo.
