The Governor of ||Kharas Region, has called on the first intake of the Keetmanshoop Vocational Training Centre to become advocates of change driving progress and development. Dawid Gertze made the call at the official welcome ceremony for the first-ever intake of trainees starting their academic journey at the new centre. A total of 138 students have enrolled as the centre's first intake of trainees. Courses offered at the centre include water supply, sanitation with desalination, mechanical engineering, solar maintenance and installation, electrical engineering, information and communication information, welding and metal fabrication, logistics and supply chain management for oil and gas and occupational health and safety. The government invested more than N$100 million dollars in the new state-of-the-art centre, consisting of 4 generic workshops, an administrative block, and a dormitory with a capacity for 140 boarders. "The government has made a massive capital investment in this region because we believe in human capital theory, which consists of education and training as the primary drivers of economic growth and individual prosperity. By bringing this institution to the ||Kharas, we have brought opportunity to your doorstep. No longer must you travel vast distances to seek quality education." He further reminded the trainees that discipline, which is complemented by direction and focus, is key, while success serves as an equaliser. ||Kharas Regional Council chairperson Gerrit Witbooi encouraged the trainees to ensure a zero rate drop-out by completing their three-year courses. His speech was read on his behalf by Suzan Ndjaleka, councillor for Nami#Nus Constituency. "You can be as smart as anything, but if you are not willing to cooperate with the trainers, with your teachers in the formal setup, then it will be of no avail. We respect self-discipline, self-respect and perseverance to stay in." The Mayor of Keetmanshoop, Francis Swartbooi, echoed the same sentiments. "Let's prove the people wrong. Because now we have an opportunity, so let's take this opportunity. The skills you acquire will not only sharpen your future but also the future of the town and region because you guys will put us on the map." The centre manager, Benedictus Diergaardt, reminded the staff and trainees that their commitment will shape the centre's future. "Let the centre be a beacon of hope, a place where potential is unlocked, where excellence is pursued and where the youth of our region are equipped not only with qualifications but also with confidence and character." Plans are also on the cards for the construction of a cafeteria and staff accommodation, as well as sports facilities at the centre.
