http://truemidwifery.com/ http://homebirth.org.za/ Ruth will share her experiences of growing up with her mother as a midwife, the care she received from midwives and her own home births, to her own journey in becoming a midwife. With colleague Lana Petersen, Ruth started Home Birth South Africa (www.homebirth.org.za), a web data base for those seeking information and advice on home birth in South Africa. Together, they also run the Cape Town Home Birth Gatherings, a quarterly gathering for those seeking information and support on home birth in Cape Town and surrounds. She has completed the Paramana doula course with Dr. Michel Odent and doula Lilliana Lammers in London in 2010 and has studied advanced Midwifery with Ina May Gaskin, Pamela Hunt and the Farm Midwives in 2011. She has been one of six South African women pioneering the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM)ʼs African Pilot Project since 2010, training as a direct entry midwife through apprenticeship based training. She travelled to the USA in 2013 to complete her final exams and qualified as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). She is also trained as a Helping Babies Breathe Facilitator and does voluntary work for Operation Smile. She is the author of The Basic Needs of a Woman in Labour, a booklet inspired by Dr. Michel Odent. This booklet explores how oxytocin works and what environmental factors are needed for birth. She is the mother of four home birthed children.
