For a recent visit to Sierra National Forest and hike to Spanish Mountain, we backpacked in to Spanish Lake and enjoyed the quiet, the solitude, the lakes, and the weather. Our trip mirrored many who have started from the Crown Valley trailhead - a defined trail with a mild gradient at the beginning that slowly deteriorated as we approached Statum Meadow. Once we climbed the hill by the meadow the trail was defined more by tree fall than an actual path. With cairns and other GPS tracks as reference, we reached Spanish Lake and set up camp about 5 miles from the trailhead. The next day we experienced more of the same on the 3’ish mile trek to Spanish Mountain. Weaving, bobbing, hurdling, and sidestepping were all in play until we reached a saddle and then snaked our way to a gully up to the ridge and the peak. We enjoyed the summit and then wound our way down to Upper Geraldine Lake where we jumped in and enjoyed the cool (but not cold) water. We headed back to camp and packed out the next day. The only people we saw during the 2.5 day trip was 1/2 mile from the trailhead on our return. If you can get past the tree fall and are comfortable with cross country hiking, Spanish Lake makes a great basecamp for a 2-3 day trip. Total mileage for the trip was ~19 miles - 5.5 miles day 1, ~8 miles day 2, and then 5.5 back to the TH
